The first trailer of Donald Glover’s new project has debuted online – it’s full of horror and thriller images.
Swarm, which will air exclusively on Prime Video on Friday, March 17, is the first of many Glover-created productions to debut exclusively on the Amazon streaming platform. And we don’t know about you, but SwarmThe game’s mesmerizing and ominous trailer has us eagerly waiting for it to arrive.
Check out the official Swarm trailer below:
Swarm stars Dominique Fishback (Judas and the Black Messiah) as Dre, a young woman who becomes increasingly obsessed with a fictional pop star. Fishback is joined by Chloe Bailey (Adult) as Dre’s sister Marisa and Damson Idris (Snowfall) as Dre’s charismatic, yet-unnamed boyfriend.
According to Vanity fair (opens in a new tab)imaginary singer-songwriter Swarm, was inspired by none other than Beyoncé, with whom Glover starred in Disney’s live-action movie Lion King redo. The duo voiced the adult Simba and Nala in the 2019 CGI film. Nabers described the show as an “anti-hero story”, albeit trained through the lens of a young black woman, even though Dre was influenced by white fictional men, including The Sopranos“Tony Sopranos and Crazy peopleis Don Draper.
Nothing unusual, Swarm explore topics related to fandoms and dark desires born of celebrity addiction. However, Glover’s new show won’t be all about horror. Swarm Expected to feature the multi-talented creator’s signature black comedy stylings, as well as his insightful observations on celebrity, parasocial relationships and the wider entertainment industry. In fact, Nabers says Swarm is similar to its sister series AtlantaGlover’s genre-bending FX TV show. With so much hype, expect it to join our list of the best Prime Video shows soon.
Glover, which he co-created Swarm with Janine Nabers (Atlanta), co-wrote and directed the series’ opening episode. It is currently unclear who joined Glover in the director’s chair. Meanwhile, Nabers and Glover were joined in the writers’ room by the latter’s brother, Stephen Glover (Atlanta), Ibra Ake (director of Beyonce’s Black is king album) and Barack and Michelle Obama’s daughter, Malia (her first role as a screenwriter).
Glover is set to be an *ahem* hardworking bee over the next few years. In February 2022, he signed an overall deal with Amazon Studios to create content for one of the world’s top streaming services. Another of his upcoming shows – adaptation Mr. and Mrs. Smith – is still in development for Prime Video, despite Phoebe Waller-Bridge, his former co-host and creator of fan favorite shows including Flea bagleaving the project in September 2021. Maya Erskine (PEN15) replaced Waller-Bridge in April 2022.
