We have more leaks about the upcoming Motorola Razr 2023 foldable – and it looks like the smaller screen on the outside of the device will be able to run full apps and even support the keyboard.
This comes from a famous tipster Evan Blass (By 9to5Google) who posted a stack of photos and videos of the flip phone ahead of its official unveiling. On the display on the cover, we see applications and games running in full screen, and a pop-up keyboard.
Here’s what looks like a mapping app, and there’s also an app that appears to be TikTok. One video shows a user tapping the home screen keyboard to reply to an instant chat contact.
On the cover
These photos and videos closely resemble official Motorola-designed promotional material, so we’re likely to see something like this when the phone is unveiled. This is said to take place around August, a year after Razr 2022.
This kind of full app support for the cover display is a welcome feature: it matches what we’ve seen in previous Razr foldables, and is something you won’t get on similar phones from other manufacturers (like the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 4).
From what we’ve heard so far, it looks like the 2023 version of the Motorola Razr will be a significant upgrade over its predecessor, and we’ve already seen photos of the phone showing a larger cover screen this time around.
Analysis: what is hidden in the name?
Evan Blass is a leaker with a great track record, and we have no reason to doubt the information and media he shares. In the same Twitter thread as the photos and video, Blass also outlined how the Razr 2023 branding will work.
As mentioned earlier, we’re apparently getting two Razr models in 2023, differing in specs and price, if not appearance. Blass says the premium phone will be the Razr Plus in the US and the Razr 40 Ultra everywhere else.
This Razr 40 Ultra name has come before. Presumably the standard models will be the Razr in the US and the Razr 40 in other regions – we’ll have to wait and see which of the rumors apply to which headphones.
This is a somewhat confusing approach, and we’re not entirely sure why this is happening – but it’s something Motorola has been doing for years. For example, the latest Motorola Edge 40 Pro is known in the United States as Edge Plus.
