ChatGPT is now available as an extension for your A laptop with Linux or a desktop computer, but this is just the beginning and some things may not work as expected.
An AI tool capable of conducting back-and-forth conversations and finding information that would otherwise take a long time to find online was released to the public in preview format in November 2022 and has seen a surge in popularity.
It has also amassed millions of users already, to the point where many have reported it being unavailable due to the service’s bandwidth being reached.
ChatGPT on Linux
As long as you have an account and ChatGPT is not full pass through, Linux users will now be able to use the tool directly from their computer as an extension, making it even easier to access.
This is possible thanks to the Gnome extension created by Rafał Mioduszewski, however, its creator also said that there may be a workaround for KDE users.
However, there are some caveats as the extension only works properly with Xorg, which rules out Wayland until a solution is proposed.
Mioduszewski also pointed out that mouse navigation still has bugs, making it necessary for users to navigate with the keyboard for a better experience, although this may not be much of a problem for some Linux users who prefer this way.
Files enabling the extension are available on the Mioduszewski website GitHub repository (opens in a new tab)and after proper configuration and reboot, users will be able to access the powerful AI tool directly from the desktop.
As for ChatGPT, although it remains free, OpenAI co-founder Greg Brockman has already suggested a professional version where users can pay for the privilege.
